1. the situation of living on a homestead.
2. the practice of living as self-sufficient a lifestyle as possible, based on ecological and sustainability considerations, as by growing produce and keeping livestock for the household's own needs, sourcing other produce needs from within the locality, sometimes also cultivating arts and crafts or making textiles for the needs of the household or for sale.
